Professional Tools Deserve Professional Care

A professional painter would never accept dried filler, damaged edges or contaminated material on the finished wall. The same standards should apply to the tools that create it.

Good tool care is not housekeeping performed after the real work is finished. It is part of the production process. Clean, straight and properly stored tools work faster, produce better surfaces and last considerably longer.

Clean before the material dries

The best time to clean a tool is immediately after use. Once paint or filler has hardened, removal requires more force and increases the risk of damaging fibres, blade edges, seals and moving parts.

Remove as much material as possible before introducing water. Scrape reusable filler back into the bucket and work excess paint from brushes and rollers onto an appropriate surface or into a separate container. Painter’s wipes can remove fresh residue from handles, frames and other hard surfaces before final cleaning.

Use water for compatible water-based products and only the cleaning agent recommended by the coating manufacturer for solvent-based materials. Never mix cleaning products without knowing that they are compatible.

Treat wash water as waste—not ordinary water

Water-based does not mean that paint or filler residues should automatically be washed into a sink or surface drain. Wash water can contain pigments, binders, preservatives, fillers and microplastic particles.

Collect and reuse cleaning water where practical. Allow solid material to settle, separate it and handle both the water and residue in accordance with local waste and wastewater requirements. A controlled, water-saving cleaning system reduces both water consumption and the volume of contaminated water requiring treatment.

Responsible cleaning protects the environment—and generally cleans tools more effectively than holding them beneath a running tap.

Protect the edge of every blade

Modern smoothing blades such as ParfaitLiss® use extremely thin, precisely formed stainless steel. Their performance depends on the straightness of the edge.

Clean the blade while the filler is still wet, using water and a soft cloth, sponge or suitable brush. Do not strike the blade against a bucket or scrape hardened material away with another metal tool. One small nick can leave a line across every subsequent wall.

Dry the blade completely and refit its edge protector before transport or storage. Never place heavy tools on top of wide blades or leave them loose in a van. A protective case is not luxury packaging; it preserves the geometry of the tool.

Keep filler rollers open and resilient

A professional filler roller works because its fibres remain open, elastic and able to carry a large volume of material. Filler left in the sleeve bonds the fibres together and permanently reduces capacity.

Remove excess material, wash through the sleeve until the fibres are clean and then extract as much water as possible without crushing or twisting it. Reshape the pile and allow the roller to dry with air circulating around it.

Do not store a damp roller sealed inside plastic for long periods. Plastic wrapping is useful during a short working break, but extended storage can create odour, microbial growth and fibre deformation.

Brushes need their shape back

Work paint out of the brush before washing it thoroughly. Clean deep into the heel, where paint accumulates around the base of the bristles, but avoid pulling or combing aggressively.

After cleaning, reshape the bristles and allow the brush to dry in its original form. Use the supplied keeper where available. Store brushes flat or suspended so that the bristle tips are not carrying the weight of the tool.

A brush that dries against the bottom of a bucket rarely regains its original precision.

Maintain the complete system

Wipe extension poles, adapters, roller frames and adjustable connectors before filler reaches the locking mechanisms. Keep threads, clips and pivoting heads clean and dry. Lubricate components only when recommended by the manufacturer, since oil can attract dust and contaminate subsequent finishing work.

Sanding tools and dust extraction equipment also require attention. Empty extractors regularly, inspect hoses and seals, clean sanding-pad openings and replace worn abrasives before they begin generating heat or scratches. Never use compressed air to spread fine sanding dust around the workplace.

Short break or finished for the day?

For a short pause, brushes and rollers may be wrapped tightly to prevent drying. For overnight or longer storage, clean them properly. A sealed bag delays drying; it does not clean the tool.

The same principle applies to every professional tool: temporary protection is not maintenance.

Quality lasts when it is protected

Premium tools are built from better steel, more resilient fibres and stronger components, but quality does not make them indestructible. It makes them worth maintaining.

Clean early, use as little water as necessary, protect precision edges and store every tool in a dry, secure place. A few disciplined minutes at the end of the job preserve performance, reduce replacement costs and ensure that tomorrow’s work begins with tools ready to deliver a professional finish.
